Julia Kupiec – 2025 Short Film Script Winner

Chicken Skin

In the summer of 2009, two seventh grade girls compete for the attention of a hotel employee at a Palm Springs resort.

Julia Kupiec is a writer-director who splits her time between New York City and Los Angeles. After studying film production and philosophy at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Julia first worked as a cinematographer and editor before fully transitioning into writing and directing.

Chicken Skin is inspired by Julia’s debaucherous Santa Barbara adolescence.

While there are many stories about the often awkward and bumpy path toward sexual maturity – this is a story about the particular way two young girls craft their identities in collaboration with and also at the expense of one another.

The screenplay commits itself to an aggressive realism: painting adolescence in all of its fraught, embarrassing and conflicted beauty.

Chicken Skin aims to honor the outgrown versions of ourselves we’d rather forget.

At 28, Julia’s directorial work has been recognized internationally by the Young Director Award at Cannes, the 1.4 Awards, the Berlin Commercial Awards and Raindance Film Festival. She’s directed commercial work for clients such as Columbia Records, the US Air Force, UMass and more. Julia is currently developing her debut feature film.
