Is Anyone There Anymore?
When Eleanor professes her love to her boyfriend, then murders his pet fish, she and her kid sister, Leone, venture into the desert seeking atonement.
Born and raised in New York City, and now living in Los Angeles, I received my B.A. in Psychology at UCLA before returning for an M.F.A in Film and TV at UCLA’s department of Theater, Film and Television. Upon graduating, I was awarded the 2022 Alfred P. Sloan Student Grand Jury prize and given the opportunity to further develop a project alongside mentorship. I am inspired by the work of Miranda July, Michel Franco, and Gaspar Noé, to name a few. My work often explores humanity under its most challenging conditions. Additional ventures in pursuit of these interests include a book of short fiction (There Is No Escape) and a landline telephone art experiment (“1800LANDLINE”). Long-term, I am curious about engaging with literature, live performance, and the arts alongside film and television.
As with many of my stories, the conception of IS ANYONE THERE ANYMORE? began with observation. I was observing the misconnections happening all around me and within myself, the state of disconnection to which this often led, and the ways in which we cope with such disconnection. While themes of this nature are not profoundly new in the landscape of contemporary art and film, I found that there is a marked difference in the extent and duration of disconnection we experience in our modern, technological, post-pandemic world. We can be constantly crossing paths, and yet it so often feels as though we are just missing one another.
Saddened by the apparent inability to escape this disconnection and scared by the ways in which we fuel it, I hope IS ANYONE THERE ANYMORE? will be a film that urges us to reconstruct our social landscape, to work against the misconnecting, and to reignite our care and attention toward one another.
