When the Galactic Federation occupy Earth to save the planet from humanity, the Green Party leader accepts the job of UK Prime Minister, but must face down a violent resistance movement bent on toppling her.

Saviours started out as a sideways look at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. How would we feel if we were being occupied by a superior power, if the Earth was declared a ‘failed state’ by an alien civilization? What if that alien power arrived in force and deposed western leaders for kowtowing to the interest of big oil? Would they be wrong to? The aliens pour in resources and help us rebuild – saving us from climate collapse. But what if they then start to impose their values on us – halting the meat industry not just because it contributes to climate change, but because they see it as barbaric? What if they try to do away with nation states and establish a one-world government?

 

Since the attack on the US Capitol however, the story has developed an additional, more contemporary, element. January 6th saw a violent resistance movement brought to you by the far-right. Underdog freedom fighters have previously been the positive face of patriotism – from the American revolution, through the French resistance, to the embattled people of Ukraine. Since Trump and Brexit, however, the far right has risen up against what they see as the cultural imperialism of a liberal elite, which imposes top-down solutions. What if a group like the English Defence League (the Proud Boys of the UK) formed the resistance against the aliens’ benign occupation? Would that sufficiently disorientate the audience that they might see things from a fresh angle?

 

Saviours is a show about the ethics of intervention – how you save a society that, like a drowning man, uses all of its strength to resist its own salvation.

I trained as an Editor on British feature films, where I murdered other peoples darlings; now, as a screenwriter, I must murder my own. My short films have played festivals worldwide and been broadcast on BBC, HBO and PBS. One of my projects has been awarded funding from the EU’s MEDIA development fund, and another won best feature script at the World London Film Festival 2022.
